go to the dogs 衰弱
That used to be a very fashionable area, but since the rich people have all moved out, it has gone to the dogs. Sammy used to be a very successful company president, but since he started drinking heavily, both he and his company have gone to the dogs. a visiting fireman 远方来客(尤指团体客人) I'm behind in my work because our office had three groups of visiting firemen in this week. I'll be home late tonight. I have to entertain a bunch of visiting firemen.

be always on the go 频繁活动
I get tired just watching Georgia, she's always on the go. With the boss away and two different groups of visiting firemen to entertain, I've been on the go all week. toy with the idea of doing something 心里盘算(有试下看的心理) Sandy appears to be toying with the idea of quitting his job. We toyed with the idea of taking a trip to Europe this summer but then decided it would be too expensive. |

the name of the game
In the capitalist world, dog-eat-dog is the name of the game today. I can't give you a raise apart from the other people in your section. I'm sorry, but that's the name of the game. know the ropes I was very fortunate when I started working. I was befriended by an old veteran who knew all the ropes. You'd best keep a low profile until you know the ropes. This is a new member of our organization. Show him the ropes, will you?

In this game, you must follow suit. If you can't, you may play any card you like. When the major oil companies raised their prices, all the other companies followed suit. When the guest of honor mistakenly drank from the finger bowl, in order to save him embarrassment all the other guests followed suit. I'm not familiar with Chinese customs, so I'll just watch what you do and follow suit. |

get wind of something
The deer, getting wind of the hunter, escaped in the opposite direction. The teacher has somehow gotten wind of our plan to cut class. Mum's the word. We don't want Mom to get wind of where we are taking her for her birthday dinner. take a lot of doing 很费事 It took a lot of doing but I finally arranged for my wife to accompany me on my trip abroad. It may take some [a bit of] doing, but I think I can convince the boss to go along with our idea. |

a burp 打嗝
Someone at the next table let out a big burp. get someone's goat That guy gets my goat. He's always inviting me out for a drink and then claiming to have forgotten to bring any money. It gets my goat the way some people push onto a train before the passengers on board can get off. I'll admit I shouldn't have hit him, but he finally got my goat with his insinuations about how I made my money. That chick's a real tiger. She scratched my face when I got her goat by calling her a young heifer. |

be into something 参与,卷入,入迷
I was into the peace movement a little when I was younger, but my interest didn't last. I love philosophy. I'm really into Kierkegaard now. Tom is too much into cars to be interested in girls. French literature is interesting, but somehow I just can't seem to get into it. near-sighted 近视的 I'm a bit near-sighted. Our daughter has been near-sighted since birth. |
